Martin García Mérou developed a multifaceted body of work not only as a critic of Argentine and South American literary production, but also as a travel writer, memoirist, historian, and poet. He played a prominent role as a critic of contemporary literary works and also in the incipient historicization of Argentine thought and literature. His History of the Argentine Republic was written for use in national schools and published in 1899.
