One of the first books by Chilean historian Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna, written in 1857, narrates the adventures of the Carrera brothers from their exile during the Reconquista to the death of the last of them, José Miguel. The book’s genesis lies in the historian’s research on his grandfather, General Juan Mackenna, who was killed in a duel by one of the Carrera brothers. Vicuña Mackenna’s work is based entirely on documents and interviews recovered by the author, making it a valuable work for historical research on the period.
