 First edition, 8vo, (235mm x 150mm), 464pp + viii, maroon calf with tooled in gilt,  engraved portrait frontispiece, folding map at the end.

Born in 1841, Tomas Caivano was an Italian lawyer and historian. He arrived in Peru in 1870, where he practiced his profession in Lima. He also dabbled in journalism, founding a bilingual newspaper called La Patria. His work on the War of the Pacific (Florencia, 1883) was one of the first published histories of the conflict. Fully integrated into Lima society, his book reflects the war from a Peruvian perspective.

Condition: discoloured throughout, first five pages somewhat loose, bookplate of Charles Crofton-Atkins.
