Manuel A Fuentes, aka “the bat”, was a Peruvian writer, a fan of political satire and the historical genre, a journalist, a jurist and a professor of legal medicine. Fuentes’ Lima: apuntes históricos, descriptivos, estadísticos y de costumbres, also published in both French and English (as Lima. Sketches of the Capital of Peru…), is lavishly illustrated with lithographs and engravings.  Working in the late 1850s and the 1860s, Fuentes took advantage of new and developing technologies such as photography and lithography. He also pursued connections with Parisian artisans and worked with local printers to create dynamic and interesting publications.  In 2022, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture declared this book part of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation and remain a valuable resource for understanding Lima’s mid-19th-century society, offering insights into its social life, traditions, and urban landscape.  Offered here is the much rare Spanish language edition, in its original binding, published a year after the French and English editions.
