La Araucana, Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga’s masterpiece, is undoubtedly one of the pillars of Hispanic American literature and a key text in the construction of Chilean national identity. Published in three parts between 1569 and 1589, this epic poem narrates the struggle between the Spanish and the Mapuche during the period of the conquest.

Ercilla  participated in the Arauco War, was a direct witness to the clashes between the colonizers and the indigenous Mapuche people.

La Araucana remains a fundamental work in the literature of Spain Golden Age.
